Underwater Housings for
Compact Digital Stills Cameras
Ikelite underwater housings are injection moulded from clear polycarbonate resin (GE Lexan). The transparent housing body provides assurance that all of the seals are working correctly (electronic water-detectors are not required), and allows control positions and information displays to be monitored easily. Ikelite closure devices, control glands, and electrical connectors have a reputation for reliability and serviceability developed through more than 40 years of experience in underwater engineering, and the range of accessories available is one of the most comprehensive in the underwater industry.

Compact Camera Housing Types:
Note that controls, control positions, and ports will vary depending on the camera model.

DC-100 housing: Based on the Ikelite Auto 35 housing. Used for small digital compact cameras (Mju, Ixus, etc.).
Depth rating: 38m or 46m depending on housing back.
Optional accessories: Tray and handle with quick-release socket #9523.31.
Slave flash systems for auxiliary lighting.
Back door O-ring: #0132.46

DC-501 housing: Used for most current compact digital cameras of conventional shape. Designed to mount on Ikelite single-handle tray with quick-release socket for lighting arm.
Depth rating: 60m.
Optional accessories: Dual handle tray #9523.32. Some housings have bulkhead connector for wired external flash. Others may be used with slave flash. Some housings have interchangeable ports.
Back door O-ring: #0110

DC-502, 572, and 582 housings: Differing type numbers reflect differences in the dimensions of the polycarbonate housing body. Most are provided with a dual-handle lighting tray. Dual tray has mounting slot for quick-detachable polypropylene base or battery pack of Ikelite Pro Video Light. The original provision for the use of a video light relates to the time when many of the technical issues relating to digital stills flash remained unresolved, but regains validity now that many stills cameras have MPEG movie capability.
Depth rating: 60m.
Optional accessories: Some housings have bulkhead connector for wired external flash. Others may be used with slave flash or video lights. Some housings have interchangeable ports.
Back door O-ring: DC-502 #0110, DC-572 #0109, DC-582 #0132.59.

Lens, Port and Filter Options

Optional 6" Dome Port
Dome Port:
Some housings have a port which can be unscrewed by the user, so that an optional 3" radius (6") dome port can be fitted. The dome port allows the camera to be used with the wide-angle converter produced by the camera manufacturer. This is the option which provides the best possible optical performance in wide-angle photography.
(Shown above is the Nikon Coolpix 8400 housing #6194.84)

M67 Filter thread:
For larger digital stills cameras, wherever lens dimensions and mechanical considerations (i.e., lens barrel movement during zooming and focusing) permit, Ikelite provides the standard lens port with an M67 (67mm x0.75) filter thread. This allows screw-in macro and wide-angle supplementary lenses (manufactured by Epoque, Inon and UN), and M67 underwater colour-correction (UWCC) filters, to be used.

A report on the results obtainable with M67 wide-angle lenses is given in the optics section.

Lens Adapters:
For very small digital stills cameras (Olympus Mju, Canon Ixus, etc.), the provision of an M67 filter ring on the lens port would result in a port which obscures the camera's built-in flash. This would reduce the functionality of the housing for users who do not wish to attach accessory lenses. The solution in this case is to use a small diameter port but supply an optional lens adapter which can be fitted to the port when required. The lens adapters shown below fit onto Ikelite digital stills housings with a 55.6mm (2+3/16") outside-diameter port. Ports manufactured after October 2004 have a groove around the outside to allow positive registration of the adapter retaining screws.
Adapter #9306.81 mounts M67 (67mm) screw fit lenses and filters.
Adapter #9306.80 mounts INON AD bayonet lenses.
The adapters are supplied with a removable flash blanking plate, which prevents exposure hot-spots and deflects flash backwards for pickup by a slave sensor. The camera built-in flash is, of course, obscured when the adapter is fitted, and the use of an external flash system or natural lighting then becomes mandatory.

Push-Fit UWCC filters:
Ikelite manufactures a push-fit rubber filter disk holder in various sizes to fit over its compact-camera and video lens ports. This is supplied as an accessory with a UR/pro blue-water underwater colour-correction (UWCC-B) filter disk installed. Since the UK is a green and pleasant land (underwater as well as above), Cameras Underwater also buys-in the bare holder and supplies it with a green water (UWCC-G) disk installed.

Quick-release handles
Digital housing trays for current camera models are supplied with quick-release handles compatible with the Ikelite Quick-Grip arm system. Quick-release handle may be converted to the earlier 3/8" stud-mount system by means of adapter #9575.3 or #9575.4. Quick-Grip fittings are made by Ikelite , Ultralight and GreenForce.
