TV Standards

Before Ampex, there was the BBC's VERA (Vision Electronic Recording Apparatus), which achived the bandwidth necessary for 405 line TV by running the tape at enormous speed. The BBC OB units were still using VERAs (or something remarkably similar) when they came to do 'Television Top of the Form' at the author's school in about 1963 (Fairfield Grammar School, Bristol). The reels were about the size of cinema reels, and lasted 15 minutes. The VERA pictures weren't that bad, and I don't think the machines ever killed anybody.
