Before Ampex, there was the BBC's VERA (Vision Electronic Recording
Apparatus), which achived the bandwidth necessary for 405 line
TV by running the tape at enormous speed. The BBC OB units were
still using VERAs (or something remarkably similar) when they
came to do 'Television Top of the Form' at the author's school
in about 1963 (Fairfield Grammar School, Bristol). The reels
were about the size of cinema reels, and lasted 15 minutes. The
VERA pictures weren't that bad, and I don't think the machines
ever killed anybody. |
